Welcome to Kalmar!

In days gone by Kalmar was once one of the most important towns in the North.  Today a bustling centre of commerce, Kalmar has the makings of a big city yet retains its old world charm and small town intimacy. The historical past is an integral part of the character of the city and a constant source of inspiration. This combined with entrepreneurial spirit and a focus on creative development makes for a dynamic present that allows Kalmar to look with optimism towards the future.  

Kalmar Castle, the Old Town and Kvarnholmen tell the tale of mighty Kings and Queens as well as commoners. Traces of the past are found in architecture, cultural artefacts and art as well as in the well- worn cobblestones that pave the streets.

Kalmar is, as ever, surrounded by water, water that has ‘presence’ and contributes a recreational dimension to the city centre. Few cities can boast of a natural beach so near the city centre as the one in Kalmar. Paths and walkways lined with greenery and those along the waterfront will inspire the visitor and encourage walks. When shops and cafés close for the day a vibrant night-life takes over with musical events, theatre, pubs, dancing and in the summer, outdoor venues and sidewalk cafés where you can relax after the day’s activities or chat with the locals.

In Kalmar everything is within easy reach and with the ‘Kingdom of Crystal’ to the west and the island of Öland to the east Kalmar offers you all the ingredients of a memorable holiday, whether you seek exciting new experiences or just want to relax, or both!
