Accommodation The City of Kalmar offers homes, known as group accommodation, affording support under the terms of the Special Support Act. This form of accommodation is intended for those people who, owing to their disability, require extensive care and supervision and who by this means can be given a chance of getting a home of their own. Group accommodation consists of a few flats grouped around shared premises. The composition of the group, made up of just a few individuals, means much for the individual’s sense of community and security.
Daily activitiesDaily activities under the Special Support Act are organised in the form of individually tailored programmes for persons with certain types of disability.
Help and supportShort-term residence outside the home is available for both adults and children. This gives disabled people an opportunity for recreation and enjoying a change of scene while at the same time it relieves relatives of some of the burden of care.
The provision of personal assistance from a limited number of people affords individuals help and support in their day-to-day life. People with functional disabilities are thus enabled to lead a more independent life.
Companionship services make it easier for the functionally disabled to keep in touch with other people, e.g. visiting friends or taking part in activities arranged with a view to the individual’s own personal needs.
Contact services are provided by people with the time to commit themselves to supporting the functionally disabled. One of their most important tasks is to break the feeling of isolation that many people suffer from. They may also supplement or replace contacts with relatives.
The Social Services Department is also responsible for arranging short-term supervision for schoolchildren over twelve. This service is directed at children and young people in need of support before and after the school day. Relief service under the Special Support Act provides relief for children and adults in their own homes and is intended to give next-of-kin an opportunity for relaxation and taking part in activities outside the home.
Relief service under the Social Services Act is given primarily to families with children suffering from some form of functional disability. Next-of-kin are provided with relief services in their own homes. The Social Services Department also has two contact groups for those with mental disabilities; their task is to provide outpatient support for people suffering from psychosocial disabilities of varying duration. Individuals are helped towards long-term improvement of their day-to-day life. Services for persons with psychic functional disabilities are often drawn up in cooperation with other public authorities.
