Information for persons wanting to marry through civil ceremony
How do we register for legal marriage or partnership?Contact the local tax authority and ask them to send you an application form for a so-called ‘hindersprövning’, a formality which confirms that there are no legal circumstances which might prevent you from marrying. Fill in the form and send the application in return to the tax authority. Within a week you will receive a certificate of permission valid for a period of 4 weeks. (You may also download the application form from the tax authority website.)
Two witnesses must be present at the wedding ceremony. Both must be of legitimate age. Write their names and addresses on a separate piece of paper.
The original certificates (not copies) must have been sent and received by us one week before the wedding date at the latest.
Civil marriage is legally binding without religious elements. The actual ceremony is quite short and takes place in ‘Rådhuset’ in Kalmar (or other place agreed upon after consultation with the officiating Justice of the Peace. The Regional Council is responsible for the appointment of such an official in each municipality.
The wedding ceremony or registration of partnership is free of charge.
Other matters such as the ring, flowers, guests, photos and attire are the responsibility of the bridal couple. If you should have any particular requirements or wishes concerning the ceremony please contact the Justice of the Peace (vigselförrättaren) in advance. After the ceremony you will receive a Certificate of Marriage.
