The objective of this activity is to install and test the system on site, in the bay of Malmfjärden. The dredging system is designed to be automated and therefore this activity was used to adjust and calibrate the system to use it in full scale.
This action was divided into three main phases.
1. Installation of the dredging system at the test location in Kalmar
The installation consisted of submerging the dredging units into the dredging area and installation of the wire system that controls the dredging units.
2. Testing of the equipment
The dredging system was first tested and adjusted individually to ensure its function. Because of problems with the original prototypes, the small scale test of the dredging units took longer than expected. This phase also included the installation of the treatment system, where treatment of incoming materials, dewatering and reject water treatment were tested, evaluated, and optimized.
Next, the sub-systems were connected, and test drives were performed using the complete system. Several parameters were tested and optimized.
An updated plan for the full scale demonstration of the project was produced, including the final decision of the outlets of the treated sediments.
3. Testing of extracting metals and/or phosphorus
The objective was to test and develop methods in laboratory scale for metals and phosphorus recovery from sediments. Different methods were tested and evaluated. This sub action also discussed possible use of the sediments.
