B3. Full-scale demonstration (completed)

The objective of Action B3 was to perform the full-scale demonstration based on the knowledge obtained during the small-scale test. During the full-scale demonstration two dredging robots, Mudsters, were connected to the treatment site and were removing sediments full-time. In this action, the goal was to evaluate if the solution could indeed effectively remove and dewater sediments without disturbing the marine environment.

The results of the full-scale demonstration showed that:

• The low-flow dredging robots, Mudster, have proved to be able to remove sediments continuously and automatically without re-suspension of particles.
• On the treatment site, the sediments have successfully been dewatered (25-30% dry matter) with low costs and low energy use, and without releasing pollutants back to the bay.

Sediments removed from the bay have been used to cover landfills in the municipality. Also, several pilots were executed to develop innovative ways for use of the sediments.

• Linnaeus University executed a pilot project with mixing sediment with soil, biochar and compost in order to evaluate the use in agriculture and horticulture.
• LIFE SURE cooperated with NETICS AB in developing applications and recipes for using the Malmfjärden bay sediments in construction and infrastructure.
