Historic traditions
At Kvarnholmen, in the centre of Kalmar, the city´s historic traditions can be seen in its buildings and defences from Sweden´s period as a great power, hundreds of years ago. Kalmar was an important meeting place for trade and politics already in the Middle Ages. In 1397, the Union of Kalmar united Sweden, Denmark and Norway into one kingdom.
Kalmar Castle is Scandinavia´s best preserved renaissance castle and dates back to the twelfth century.
Today, Kalmar Castle is an active arena for concerts, conferences, dinners and feasts. Topical exhibitions and activites with historic overtones are arranged for visitors of all ages.
Work and study in Kalmar
Kalmar is known as an active commercial city. In recent years, a large number of well-known chain stores have opened here and several big shopping centres have been built.

An important cluster of the development is the Linnaeus University. Linnaeus University is one of Sweden's newest higher education institutions. It was formed when the University of Kalmar and Växjö University merged in 2010. Linnaeus University has approximately 33 000 students in 150 degree programmes and 1 300 single-subject courses.
